Psychothriller o tom, jak náhodná nevěra a vydírání zcela rozvrátí život dosud bezkonfliktního muže. Jednoho dne se ve vlaku setkají dva lidé: Charles, spořádaný manžel a otec, a Lucinda, krásná mladá paní. Oba jsou k sobě osudově přitahováni a netuší, že nevinný flirt bude mít nedozírné následky. V hotelu, kam se oba uchýlí, jsou brutálně přepadeni, Lucinda je znásilněna, Charles zbit a oba jsou okradeni. Bezcharakterní pachatel začne pak muže nelítostně vydírat, čímž úplně zničí jeho osobní i rodinný život a donutí ho k zoufalému činu. Velmi dobře napsaný thriller, psychologicky vyvážený, napínavý až do konce. U nás již byl vydán v roce 2003 ve stejném překladu, ovšem s názvem Vykolejený. Zfilmováno s Jennifer Anistonovou a Clivem Owenem v hlavních rolích.

I Lucinda je vdaná. Snad to bylo atmosférou té ranní chvíle, že se rozhodli dát v sázku svůj dosavadní pohodový život a dopustili, aby nevinný flirt přerostl v nekontrolovatelnou vášeň, která je dovedla až do ošuntělého hotelu Fairfax. Za dveřmi pokoje nabere tuctová nevěra prudký zvrat:milence přepadne útočník, který si říká Vasquez. Charlese brutálně zmlátí, Lucindu znásilní a ještě oba okrade. Avšah Charlesova procházka peklem tím teprve začíná. Vasquez ho začne vydírat tak rafinovaně, že v průběhu několikatýdnů je Charlesův život v troskách a každý pokus o návrat do starých klidných časů má jediný efekt: dodává Vasquezovi sílu klást stále nehoráznější požadavky. Charles se na pokraji zoufalství rozhodne pro radikální řez, ale i pak má pocit, že se nad ním vznáší temný Vasquezův stín...
