James R. Newman était un mathématicien et historien des mathématiques américain. Il a également exercé le droit à New York de 1929 à 1941. Pendant et après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a occupé des postes gouvernementaux importants, notamment celui de Chief Intelligence Officer à l'ambassade des États-Unis à Londres et d'Assistant Spécial du Sous-secrétaire à la Guerre. Il a notamment contribué à la rédaction de l'Atomic Energy Act de 1946. Newman a rejoint le comité de rédaction de Scientific American en 1948. Il est également crédité pour avoir inventé et décrit pour la première fois le concept mathématique de « googol » dans son livre influent, « Mathematics and The Imagination ».
