Der thematische Schwerpunkt dieser traverse beschäftigt sich mit den Gründen dieser Forschungslücke. Er versucht die historische Erforschung der Geschichte der Parteien in der Schweiz neu anzustossen. Die Beiträge befassen sich einerseits mit der Schweizerischen Volkspartei (SVP), der ehemaligen Bauern-, Gewerbe- und Bürgerpartei (BGB), ihrer programmatischen Entwicklung und dem Aufkommen neuer populistischer Bewegungen der extremen Rechte seit den 1960er-Jahren. Auf der anderen Seite werden die drei wichtigen politischen Parteien des 20. Jahrhunderts, die katholisch-konservative (CVP) die freisinnig-demokratische (FDP) und die sozialdemokratische Partei (SPS) auf der Basis neuer Forschungen analysiert.
Untersucht werden drei Ebenen des Phänomens Philanthropie: Die philanthropischen Praktiken, Institutionen und Gesellschaften, insofern diese, wie so oft, einem Legitimitätsbedürfnis von Individuen entspringen oder (was für entmachtete Eliten charakteristisch zu sein scheint) das Ergebnis eines Versuchs sind, neue Beziehungsnetze zu knüpfen und Einfluss zu gewinnen. Die Philanthropie in Bezug auf soziale Konflikte und deren Regelung, aber auch im Verhältnis zum Staat - auf der Ebene der Sozialpolitik, des Bildungswesens, der Kultur- und Fiskalpolitik. Die Philanthropie als Mittel zur Ausdehnung des 'Marktes', wobei die löblichsten Absichten oft mit puren Machtstrategien kombiniert werden. Sowohl für die Geschichtswissenschaft als auch für die Justiz bedeuten die Aufarbeitung und Beurteilung zeitgeschichtlicher Vorgänge sowie die Suche nach Wahrheit und Gerechtigkeit besondere Herausforderungen.
