V Zenu bylo běžnou praxí zaznamenávání po- střehů ve formě krátkých veršů na kousek papíru nebo kousek bambusu. Autoři je potom zavěšovali na ze či strom, často anonymně. Nyní se toto v Japonsku již stalo formální tradicí. Snad tím nejznámějším graffitem v Zenu byl verš Šestého Patriarchy Hui-Nenga, který byl napsán na klášterní ze: „Není tu žádný strom Bódhi; Bez omezení je zářné zrcadlo; Kde by mohl zůstat prach od chvíle, kdy je vše prázdné?“ Autor této knihy byl při tvorbě těchto graf- fitů inspirován starými zenovými mistry.
