Seržant Charles Coward je v roce 1940 zajat ve Francii a rozhodne se vést vlastní soukromou válku proti Němcům. Několik let se mu daří vodit je za nos, sabotovat, škodit jim a přenášet cenné informace do Anglie. S pomocí polských ilegálních skupin dodával zbraně a dynamit vězňům, kupoval mrtvá těla a s jejich pomocí postupně zorganizoval útěk čtyř stovek vězňů s Osvětimi. Nakonec se sám "propašoval" do Osvětimi, vmísil se mezi zajatce a byl nucen opět prchnout aby unikl popravě. Je to jeden z nejúžasnějších příběhů odvahy a hrdinství v druhé světové válce.
