Tree Weekend does not show final products of individual design processes. The Norwegian designer Kim Hiørthoy rather attempts to capture the brief moments in which ideas are created. Photographs, hand drawings and computer graphics from very diverse disciplines brought back to their core - from roughly sketched to elaborately presented. The result has more resemblance to a film than to a book, happens with serious playfulness and only to the extent which is needed to increase one´s awareness of everyday images, processes and language which often are the key to good design. Kim Hiørthoy's ideas are born on shaky ground, not in a safe haven. That´s why Tree Weekend is an amusingly-calculated and interdisciplinary flood of fragile moments and images somewhere between modern HipHop graphics, sketch book entries, photo files, kindergarten games and the preparation of a potato soup.

Kim Hiorthøy's book of very short stories manages the almost impossible balancing act of weighing up the comedic against the poignant, tying both together with knots of absurdity. Often no more than a few lines long, this series of 40-odd texts is like a wall riddled with bullet holes, each one offering a snatched glimpse into a contemporary world of mundane, heartbreaking failure, joyous collapse and confounding realisations.

Kurt ist Gabelstapler aus Leidenschaft. Deshalb stört es ihn auch nicht, dass er viel arbeiten muss. Als er eines Tages einen riesengroßen Fisch geschenkt bekommt, muss Kurt sich erst einmal keine Gedanken mehr darüber machen, wie er seine Familie ernähren kann. Prompt entscheidet er sich, mit seiner lieben Frau und den drei Kindern die Welt zu bereisen – mit Riesenfisch und gelbem Gabelstapler im Gepäck. Die Familie tanzt bis in die Puppen an brasilianischen Stränden, lernt, dass man in der Antarktis keine Limo trinken kann und hoppla … warum werden sie denn auf einmal von 400 wütenden Indern verfolgt? Kurt ist in Norwegen längst schon Kult – ein spannender (Vor-) Lesespaß für die ganze Familie!

Kurt, der Gabelstapelfahrer, ist glücklich, aber er denkt, wenn er so richtig viel Geld hätte, müsste er noch viel, viel glücklicher sein. Wie es der Zufall so will, kommt Kurt tatsächlich zu Geld - masslos viel Geld! Nachdem er davon, sehr zum Leidwesen seiner Familie, lauter unnütze neue Sachen gekauft hat, reicht es ihm plötzlich nicht mehr, nur Geld zu haben - jetzt will er auch Macht. Und plötzlich findet Anne-Lise, die Frau von Kurt, ihren Mann so richtig eklig ...
