Im Zentrum der Oper steht der indische König Poros, der sich 327 v. Chr. gegen Alexander den Großen wehrt. Cleofide, seine Geliebte, setzt ihre Schönheit ein, um Alexander zu beeinflussen und Poros zu retten. Die 1731 uraufgeführte Oper Poro, Re dell'Indie, basierend auf Metastasios Werk, besticht durch ihren exotischen Schauplatz und die fesselnde Handlung. Der Auftritt des berühmten Kastraten Senesino trug maßgeblich zum Erfolg bei. Ein umfangreicher Anhang bietet zusätzliche Kompositionen von Händel und die originale Fassung von Cleofides Arie.

Das Werk, das im Februar 1744 uraufgeführt wurde, ist ein einzigartiges musikalisches Drama, das sich keiner klaren Gattung zuordnen lässt. Inspiriert von der griechischen Mythologie, erzählt es die tragische Geschichte von Semele, der Geliebten des Zeus, und der Eifersucht von Hera, die zu ihrem Tod führt. Obwohl Händel das Stück nur konzertant aufführte, hat es sich für szenische Inszenierungen ab dem 20. Jahrhundert bewährt. (Southern Music). In the key of G Major, the work begins with a Moderato where dotted rhythms are abundant. A brief Adagio intervenes and we continue with a slightly fugal, crisply rhythmic Allegro, with 16th note passage work for the upper strings. After another brief Adagio, Handel finishes with a lyric Minuet. All sections are active throughout. This Overture is a wonderful introduction to the Baroque period and the bowing and ornamental styles that go with it.

This early works is a fascinating composition by G.F.Handel from the year 1746.
