Katie McDonaldová, matematický génius a kurátorka místního muzea hádanek, pořádá soutěž v luštění sudoku. Je to její velký úspěch, ale jen do chvíli, kdy je jeden ze šampiónů nalezen mrtev. Katie musí najít vraha dříve, než policie celou soutěž zruší.

Kate McDonaldová, uznávaná matematička a pracovnice prestižního výzkumného ústavu se vrací domů - do městečka Granville v New Hampshire. Chce pomoci svému učiteli a příteli, profesoru Avondaleovi, zachránit jeho muzeum hlavolamů, ve kterém strávila nejkrásnější chvíle svého dětství. Než ale může něco podniknout, najde profesora - milovníka nejrůznějších rébusů a hlavolamů - mrtvého za psacím stolem v jeho domácí pracovně. Starý pán má před sebou zčásti vyplněnou tabulku sudoku. Kate teď musí zvládnout dva úkoly - nejen zachránit muzeum, které by mělo padnout za oběť stavbě nového nákupního střediska, ale také najít profesorova vraha. Zjišťuje, že oblíbeného a důvěřivého profesora kdosi okradl o obrovské částky. Kromě toho mu někdo posílá výhrůžné dopisy. Při hledání zloděje, vyděrače i vraha pomáhá mladé ženě čtrnáctiletý Harry, který poslední dobou trávil s profesorem veškerý volný čas, podobně jako kdysi ona. Vlastní vyšetřování vede i nový velitel místní policie Brandon Mitchell. Jejich snaha je o to náročnější a nebezpečnější, že profesorovou vraždou dramatické události v muzeu zdaleka nekončí. Kate je přesvědčená, že klíčem k vraždě by mohla být tabulka sudoku, na které profesor zřejmě pracoval těsně před smrtí.
