Producto de la aplicación por parte de Arnold van Gennep del método comparado y de la síntesis etnográfica, “Los ritos de paso”, obra publicada en 1909, supuso un hito en el campo de la antropología y de las ciencias sociales. La expresión que le da título, así como el término “liminaridad”, pasaron a acuñar conceptos que en lo sucesivo hicieron fortuna. En las sociedades tradicionales los ritos de paso marcan la socialización de las transiciones más importantes en la vida humana, como el nacimiento, la iniciación, el matrimonio y la muerte, y contribuyen a preservar la estabilidad de la sociedad regulando la posición del individuo en su seno.
