Cílem československých legionářů je připojit se ke spojeneckým vojskům na západní frontě a přispět k vytvoření Československé republiky. Klíčovým krokem je zmocnit se Transsibiřské magistrály, dostat se do Vladivostoku a následně lodí do Evropy. Tím začíná tříletá železniční odysea, plná chaosu občanské války v bývalé carské říši. Příběh zachycuje cestu národa, který se doslova vydává na pochod za svobodou. V Praze na podzim 1938 se učitel výtvarné výchovy Josef Černý dozvídá o mnichovském diktátu, což ho přivádí k myšlenkám o zániku Československa, země, kterou pomáhal vybudovat. Vzpomíná na své skicáře a zápisky přítele Jaroslava Švejka. V Čeljabinsku 14. května 1918 se Jaroslavův pluk konečně připojuje k 1. československé divizi, ale radost z shledání brzy zastíní tragické události. O den později jsou legionáři konfrontováni s rozhodnutím mezi smrtí a vzpourou poté, co Trocký nařídí zatčení českých legionářů. Vzpoura se šíří od Volhy po Vladivostok, a legionáři se zmocňují Transsibiřské magistrály, což je vrhá do středu ruské občanské války. V červenci dorazí k Jekatěrinburku, kde je uvězněna carská rodina, a Pepa s Jaroslavem se musí vydat na záchranu dvanáctiletého chlapce.
