Après le départ de ses enfants pour l'université, elle s'est mise à écrire, connaissant d'abord le succès au milieu des années 1980 avec des romances de catégorie. Dans les années 1990, Johansen s'est tournée vers des romances historiques pleines de suspense, puis vers la fiction policière, avec laquelle elle a obtenu un grand succès. Son œuvre se caractérise par des intrigues captivantes et des personnages féminins forts.
