Turner zde na základě vlastních zkušeností z terénních výzkumů mezi africkými kmeny dokazuje, že analýza rituálního chování a symbolů může být využita jako klíč k pochopení sociálních struktur a procesů. Navazuje na Van Gennepův pojem „liminální fáze“, který rozšiřuje na mnohem obecnější rovinu a využívá jej k osvětlení rozsáhlé oblasti sociálních jevů.
