Jeho čitatelia boli fascinovaní bizarnými príbehmi plnými dômyselných zápletiek, exotických prostredí a tajomných postáv. Počiatočne písal poviedky z austrálskeho života, no rýchlo sa zameral na žánrovú literatúru, čím sa stal vyhľadávaným autorom detektívok, sci-fi a gotického hororu. Jeho dielo obsahuje množstvo nevšedných postáv, pričom najvýraznejšími sú oslniví darebáci. Rád opisoval nadprirodzených diablov a deformovaných šialencov, pričom najväčšiu slávu mu priniesol medzinárodný zločinec doktor Nikola, ktorý sa stal predobrazom protivníka agenta 007 Jamesa Bonda.
