Válečný román zachycuje jednu z epizod bojů britské armády v severní Africe v období druhé světové války. Protagonistou válečné prózy, vypovídající o hrdinství britských vojáků, je Colin Spence, mladý spisovatel z Londýna, absolvent Oxfordu, nyní sloužící jako desátník a zástupce velitele, drsného a zkušeného seržanta Kellyho, jediného profesionálního příslušníka čtrnáctičlenné čety v Libyjské poušti. Jednoho rána jsou muži vysláni na původně jednodenní průzkum. Hlídka však zabloudí a osm jejích členů zahyne během útoků tří italských bombardovacích letadel a další dva při přestřelce s posádkou nepřátelskkého obrněného vozu.
