Matei Vișniec a découvert la littérature comme un espace de liberté, puisant sa force chez Kafka, Dostoïevski et les surréalistes, tout en rejetant le réalisme socialiste. Il croit en la résistance culturelle et en la capacité du théâtre et de la poésie à dénoncer la manipulation par les "grandes idées" et le lavage de cerveau idéologique. Sa première poésie roumaine était reconnue pour sa clarté et son amertume, bien que ses premières pièces aient été interdites de représentation. Après son émigration en France, il a commencé à écrire en français, et ses œuvres sont depuis jouées à l'international.
