My lidé se rádi vidíme jako něco lepšího než zvířata, fakt ale je, že jsme stále součástí přírody. První část knihy, „Temná strana přírody", ukazuje, že ačkoliv život a jeho prostředí spěje k vyváženosti, řádu, stavu „tak akorát“, zlo se v něm přesto vyskytuje. Je nevyhnutelné a vzniká tehdy, kdy dojde ke: ztrátě místa (když je něco přemístěno tam, kam nepatří, třeba králíci do Austrálie). Problém správného a špatného místa. ztrátě rovnováhy (přemnožení některého druhu). Druhá a třetí část probírá lidskou povahu; na mnoha příkladech z historie nedávné i starší ukazuje, jak je výsledné chování složeno z geneticky optimalizované strategie pro zachování genů (být milí k příbuzným, neutrální ke známým a nepřátelští k cizím, hodně klamat) a kulturních hodnot, šířených jako memy. Zlo tedy nemůžeme hledat kdesi jinde, venku, nějakého ďábla, ale jen a pouze v nás. Jako naši nedílnou součást. Jungův genetický stín.
