Díky oddanosti, s níž sloužil lidu a která je obsažena i v jeho vrcholném díle Summa Theologica, se stal patronem vzdělanců. Roku 1323, padesát let po své smrti, byl prohlášen za svatého.

Er deutete die menschliche Arbeit im Horizont der gesellschaftlichen Veranderungen seiner Zeit als Teilhabe am Schopfungswerk Gottes und als eine Fortsetzung der Inkarnation. Der geschichtliche Prozess der Menschwerdung Gottes ist in dieser Perspektive noch langst nicht abgeschlossen, vielmehr bietet er eine theologische Denkform, die im Sinne des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils eine entschlossene Offnung zur Welt beinhaltet. Nicht zuletzt deshalb sind Chenus Gedanken auch heute noch wegweisend.

Thomas von Aquin gilt als einer der Hauptvertreter der Scholastik. Er hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk, das bis in unsere heutige Zeit nachwirkt.
