Through a detailed examination, the work aims to understand the dynamics of this evolving super heavy diplomatic relationship and its potential impact on international politics.

The study extends the literature on venture capital by examining whether entrepreneur's choice for an external investor and certain firm characteristics have an impact on venture success or not. The focus is set on the differences in value creation by venture capitalists and business angels for ventures of the high- and low-technology sector. The assessment of a data set including 252 Series A financing rounds by venture capitalist firms, business angels and collaborative investments of both investors conducted between 2005 and 2012 unveils value enhancing aspects for all three financing solutions. Overall, start-ups initially financed by venture capitalist firms perform best with regard to general venture success, whereas start-ups collaboratively supported by venture capitalists and business angels have the highest chances to exit successfully through a trade sale. It becomes further apparent that ventures located in one of the high-technology industries 'internet', 'pharmaceuticals' and 'high-tech', ventures that are longer established in the market and ventures whose Series A financing round was executed more recently indicate an enhanced likelihood of success.

This dissertation examines three research questions on institutional investing and corporate responsibility. First, I focus on institutional investors with a high commitment to responsible investing and examine their influence on environmental and social firm performance. I find that these investors alone drive the positive link between institutional ownership and corporate sustainability. The same investors also play a critical role in the success of collaborative engagements and in preventing adverse corporate incidents. The results advocate a differentiated view on institutional investment and corporate sustainability. Second, I examine if ownership by passive investors influences firms toward more long-term-oriented action, using an international sample of more than 28,000 companies. Firms with high passive ownership invest more in R& D, file more patents, strengthen their organizational capital, and use more long-term-oriented language in their annual disclosure. My findings suggest that passive ownership has the potential to curb shorttermism at the level of the firm. Third, I study the effect of equity index membership on environmental firm performance based on a unique international dataset of 132 index launches. I find that firms added to new stock indexes significantly alter environmental sustainability. The same companies also amend their CSR-related disclosure while increasing accounting profitability. The results suggest that stock indexes constitute a salient mechanism influencing the norms of corporate behavior.

Research in Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics has experienced a significant increase in contributions from varying fields of language studies, gaining the attention of scholars from all over the world. This volume aims to showcase the variety of topics relevant to the study of language(s) in colonial, postcolonial and decolonial contexts. A main reason of this variety is that the new paradigm invites and necessitates research on different subject matters such as language typology, grammar and cross-linguistics, meta-linguistics and research on language ideology, discourse analysis and pragmatics. The contributions of this volume are selected, peer-reviewed papers which were partly invited and partly given at the First Bremen Conference on Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics, held in September 2013.
