Pouze několika esejím Briana O’Dohertyho se dostalo tak bezprostředního ohlasu jako eseji Inside the White Cube, která byla původně publikována v podobě tří článků v Artforu v roce 1976 a následně byla zařazena do knihy stejného názvu. Účinek esejí byl okamžitý. Diskutovalo se o nich, vycházely anotace, citovaly se, sbíraly a překládaly – tři výtisky Artfora, ve kterých se eseje objevily, bylo téměř nemožné sehnat. Jak sám autor poznamenal, řada umělců mu poté sdělila, že sami uvažovali, že napíší něco podobného. Hlavní myšlenku eseje – to, jak se vyrovnat s konvenční bílou kostkou coby modelem galerijního prostoru – sdíleli mnozí jeho současníci.
