Kolekce fotografií Václava Havla začala vznikat na přelomu let 2011 a 2012 bezprostředně po jeho pohřbu. Prvotním záměrem byla výstava věnovaná období Havlova veřejného působení i soukromého života, včetně 13 let v prezidentském úřadu, jak jej zachytili fotoreportéři ČTK v letech 1988 až 2011. Tým autorů při jejím sestavování prohlédl kolem 14.000 fotografií v archivu ČTK. Finální výběr stovky velkoformátových snímků byl pak poprvé k vidění na Staroměstské radnici v Praze, kde ČTK v červnu a červenci 2012 uspořádala výstavu nazvanou Prezident.
