Une expédition scientifique découvre près des pyramides un objet étrange couvert de symboles inconnus. L'armée commence à l'étudier en secret, mais des décennies passent avant qu'un homme, l'égyptologue Daniel Jackson, ne parvienne à déchiffrer les inscriptions. Il réalise que ces symboles représentent des coordonnées pour un voyage à travers l'espace vers une planète lointaine. Une mission est alors décidée, dirigée par le colonel O'Neil. Cependant, le symbole permettant le retour sur Terre manque sur la porte des étoiles et devra probablement être trouvé sur place. L'expédition a besoin des connaissances de Daniel, qui devient donc malgré lui membre de l'équipe. Ce jeune intellectuel maladroit se retrouve dans un monde étrange, à l'époque de la civilisation égyptienne ancienne, où les habitants vivent dans la peur, asservis par un souverain divin, et où le danger guette à chaque coin de rue.
