Das Werk ist das höchste poetische Kompendium des antiken Nahen Ostens und am ehesten mit modernen Gefühlen verwandt: Freundschaft, Schmerz, Tod, Pessimismus, die Suche nach Unsterblichkeit sind die Themen dieses Gedichts, in dem die mythologische Materie dazu dient, die tiefsten und ewigen menschlichen Unruhen auszudrücken.
