Neuf des douze textes composant ce recueil avaient été publiés en 1939 aux éditions Grasset. S. Zweig raconte et commente des événements aussi divers que la prise de Byzance, la découverte de l'Eldorado ou les derniers mois de la vie de Haendel.

Román líčí útěk z koncentračního tábora politického vězně George Heislera. Spolu s ním utíká ještě dalších šest vězňů. Pro uprchlíky je připraveno sedm křížů. Šest vězňů nacisté chytnou a jsou pověšeni na platany seřezané do tvaru kříže. Georgovi se podaří uprchnout a dostává se přes hranice. Sedmý kříž zůstane prázdný a stane se pro vězně jakýmsi symbolem odhodlání k odporu proti fašismu a solidarity, kterou nemůže potlačit žádný teror. Autorka v tomto románu líčí i život v německých vesnicích a městech. George se dostane do městečka, kde vpadne celý vyčerpaný do domu lékaře. Ten, ač tuší, že jde o uprchlíka a že by mohl z toho mít velké problémy, Georgeho ošetří a pomůže mu...

Avec la figure de Monsieur Keuner, parfois simplement appelé Monsieur K., Brecht a commencé à travailler à la fin des années vingt. Une sélection de onze de ces histoires, qui – comme le titre principal l'indique – peuvent provenir de Monsieur Keuner tout autant que le concerner, a été intégrée en 1930 dans le premier numéro de la série des Essais de Brecht. Deux ans plus tard, il a enrichi cette collection dans le cinquième numéro des Essais (1932) avec une nouvelle sélection de neuf histoires. Parmi les premiers textes, créés en 1929 et publiés en 1930, figure par exemple "Organisation". Les récits de Monsieur Keuner explorent des thèmes tels que la condition humaine, la société, et la lutte pour la vérité, tout en utilisant un style narratif qui mêle ironie et réflexion critique. Brecht y développe une vision du monde où l'individu se confronte aux réalités complexes de son époque, offrant ainsi une critique sociale profonde à travers des situations souvent absurdes et paradoxales.

Reviewing the work of the Berlin Ensemble, Harold Clurman has written: "The play which most strongly stamped on my mind a sense of Brecht's great stature as an artist of the theatre was Galileo ." And again: " Galileo is entirely contemporary in view of the events of our atomic age and in relation to certain problems of conscience." The adaptation is the famous one which was brought to completion by Brecht himself, working with Charles Laughton, who played Galileo in the first two American productions of the play (Hollywood and New York, 1947). Since then the play has become a classic of the world repertoire.

Zahrnuje ukázky z jeho lyriky, hry Život Galileiho (1939) a Šesťáková opera (1928), výbor z drobných satirických próz Historky o panu Keunerovi, úryvky z politicky orientovaných satirických dialogů Hovory na útěku a úryvky z teoretických prací o divadle a z myšlenek o umění.

Na prosté dějové osnově "Odměny" (mladý dělník-komunista nařčený nacisty z politické vraždy, se ukrývá na vesnici u svého příbuzného, chudého chalupníka, kterého stále větší bída donutí prozradit uprchlíka za vypsanou odměnu 500 marek) ukazuje autorka, jak nesnesitelné hmotné bídypracujících využívali nacističtí agitátoři k tomu, aby pocit třídní solidarity venkovského proletariátu v zárodku ničili změr vyvolávanými rvačkami a protižidovskými štvanicemi, a jak politicky uvědomělí zástupci dělnické třídy přes krutý teror zůstávali nepřístupni nacistickým "ideologiím", "Transit", jenž navazuje námětově na román "Sedmý kříž", nám převádí osudy pokrokových Němců, jimž se podařilo utéci za hranice. Hlavním dějištěm je Paříž za doby německého vpádu a Marseille. Hrdiny příběhu jsou štvanci, posedlí jedinou utkvělou myšlenkou: získat stůj co stůj do pasu razítko, které se jmenuje transit a které jim umožní průjezd zemí jež leží na cestě k cíli.

Svazek obsahuje tři Brechtova dramata: Strach a bída třetí říše (1938) — Matka Kuráž a její děti (1939) — Život Galileiho (1939).
