Peter has run away from home and finds refuge with the old Moses Beech. Lost in a snowstorm and utterly exhausted, Peter stumbles upon Moses's cottage. The old man takes him in, and Peter, having fled from home, stays for nearly a year. At first, he must adjust to Moses's rough demeanor, but through their shared work in the house and garden, and during long evenings together, they become friends. When Peter meets Susan, he wishes he could stay forever. The story explores themes of friendship, belonging, and the transformative power of human connection in the face of hardship.
