Siebzehn Jahre alt ist Matthisson, als er im Frühjahr 1778 erstmals die Wörlitzer Anlagen betritt: eine Begegnung mit Folgen. In dem großen Garten östlich von Dessau findet der Dichter seine Lebenslandschaft. Hier dient er von 1795 bis 1811 als 'Lector und Reise-Geschäftsführer' der Fürstin. Von hier aus zieht er nach Italien und in die Schweiz. Zwei Ehen führt Matthisson in Wörlitz, ein Kind trägt er zu Grabe, im Herbst 1806 schützt er das Schloss vor den Truppen Napoleons. Nach dem Tod der Fürstin wandert Matthisson nach Stuttgart ab, um 1828 nach Wörlitz zurückzukehren, wo er 1831 stirbt und beigesetzt ist. Nie habe er, schreibt Matthisson 1794, die Wörlitzer Anlagen verlassen, 'ohne die beglückende Stille des Geistes, welche, nach Horazens Ausdruck, Bitterkeiten durch sanftes Lächeln mildert, und die Mutter der echten Lebensweisheit ist'. In Briefen, Gedichten und Tagebuchblättern finden die Wörlitzer Jahrzehnte ihre sprechende Gestalt.
