Vyprávění chlapce Billyho Manna, jehož matka zanechala na schodech domu jeho dědečka, který se sám ujal vnukovy výchovy. Podivínský děd Mann - alkoholik - najde jednoho dne na svém prahu kojence a ujímá se jeho výchovy, neboť podle cedulky, kterou má dítě u sebe, je to jeho vnuk. To se mu potvrzuje i tím, že se Billymu zdá tzv. dědičný sen Mannů. Děda má radost z pokračovatele rodu, neboť otec Billyho byl sestřelen ve válce ve Vietnamu. Do místy humorně vyprávěného příběhu soužití Billyho s jeho dědou jsou zařazeny i vzpomínky na válečná "dobrodružství" dědy a dalších příbuzných kdysi váženého a bohatého klanu Mannů.
