This book is an English translation of Book 21 of the Astrologia Gallica, in which Morin sets forth his method of horoscope interpretation. In the first section of the book he reviews the methods of other astrologers and explains why they are insufficient. In the second section he explains his own method, which is both different from and superior to the traditional methods. Morin was a physician who became the most renowned of all French astrologers. He was appointed Royal Mathematician to King Louis XIII and was summoned to be present at the birth of the royal heir, the future King Louis XIV. His master work, the Astrologia Gallica, was published in Paris in 1661. It consists of a Preface and 26 individual books in the scholarly Latin of the 17th century. Many of these Books are now available in English translation, but Book 21 should be read first as it contains the fundamental explanation of the Morin method. Richard S. Baldwin made this English translation directly from the Latin text.
Pečlivě zpracované dílo přeložené z latinského originálu z roku 1661 vydané pod záštitou Astrologické společnosti ČR a redigované Zdeňkem Bohuslavem Samotná rozsáhlá práce Jeana Baptisty Morina nevznikala lehce. Více než 30 let ji psal sám autor, vydána tiskem byla až roku 1661, tedy pět let po jeho smrti, díky zájmu a finanční podpoře polské královny Luisy Marie Gonzaga. Byla sepsána v čase velikánů Galilea Galilei, Tychona de Brahe, Johanna Keplera a Placida de Titi, ale také v čase buly Urbana VIII. proti astrologům a v čase rostoucího vlivu myšlenek filosofa a přírodovědce René Descarta (+1650). Nastupující osvícenství současně posilovalo materialistický náhled na svět. Uvedené kulturně-historické okolnosti, velký rozsah (850 stran formátu A3) a latinský jazyk přispěly k tomu, že toto Morinovo dílo vyšlo pouze jednou a až téměř do konce 19. století o něj nebyl zájem. Teprve po oživení astrologie v posledních létech 19. a od počátku 20. století se postupně začíná řadit mezi inspirační zdroje astrologů dnešní doby... Es ist eine Ironie des Schicksals, daß in der Astrologie heute sehr wenig über das Werk jenes Mannes bekannt ist, der ihre Deutungsgrundlagen entscheidend prägte: Jean Baptiste Morin, der 1630 als Professor der Mathematik an das Collège de France berufen wurde. Sein Lebenswerk, an dem er über 30 Jahre arbeitete, trägt den Titel ASTROLOGIA GALLICA, ein umfangreicher Foliant, der in 26 Bücher unterteilt ist. Morin sah das Werk nie gedruckt, da es erst 1661 posthum in Den Haag erschien. Sein Ansatz basiert auf der Lehre des Ptolemaeus, den er von mittelalterlichen Zusätzen und abergläubischen Regeln befreite und mit den Kenntnissen des 17. Jahrhunderts aktualisierte. Das Kernstück seiner astrologischen Theorie ist die im 21. Buch dargestellte Determinationslehre. Im ersten Teil des 21. Buches untersucht Morin die Theorien über den Einfluss der Gestirne, die von Kepler und anderen Zeitgenossen vertreten wurden, und erläutert schlüssig, was er akzeptiert oder zurückweist. Im zweiten Teil beschreibt er sein Lehrgebäude im Detail und vertritt die Auffassung, dass die Herrschaft der Planeten und Zeichen vorrangig behandelt werden sollte. Dieser Gedanke der Zeichenherrschaft ist ein Grundbegriff im System nach Morin und gehört zum unverzichtbaren Wissen eines ausübenden Astrologen.
