Kniha obsahuje dve diela: Zámok Otranto (1764) od Horacea Walpolea a Vathek (1786) od Williama Beckforda. Obe diela sú ukážkami anglického gotického či lepšie hrôzostrašného románu z 18. storočia. V prvom, vo Walpolovom romantickom príbehu z Talianska, stáva sa čitateľ svedkom naplnenia dávneho proroctva, ktoré predpovedá pád kniežaťa Manfréda, tyrana a uzurpátora zámku Otranto. V Beckfordovom Vathekovi, ktorý vznikol v období rozkvetu tohto žánru, ožíva tajuplný Orient.
Soubor prvních gotických románů, jimž dominuje Walpolův Otrantský zámek (1764). Příběh zasazený do středověké Itálie, v němž se ve zdech gotického hradu, v jeho podzemí i blízkém okolí naplňuje za pomoci nadpřirozených jevů záhadná věštba, že vláda v otrantském knížectví, až dozraje čas, přejde z moci nezákonného uchvatitele do rukou právoplatného dědice... Známé je též filmové zpracování J. Švankmajera. Uspořádal a předmluvu („Romány, ve kterých straší“) a doslov („Průkopníci gotického románu“) napsal Jaroslav Hornát.
