The Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang are a treasure house of ancient Chinese art. Even today, murals and painted sculptures remain in 492 of the caves. This book aims to take Cave 254, dating from the Northern Wei Dynasty, as an example to guide readers to a deeper understanding of the historical culture and artistic achievements of the grottoes in Dunhuang. Having laid out the historical background of the excavation of Cave 254 in the way of historical narration, the book starts with a close reading of the murals on the north and south walls of Cave 254, following the spatial order inside the cave. Combined with the architectural form, murals, and painted sculptures, it offers an overall interpretation of the construction and conception of the grottoes. The hope is that this sort of model case will allow for a richer experience beyond the usual introduction, so that readers and viewers can have a better understanding of the spirit and meaning behind the images and more specifically experience the superb skills and ingenuity of the creators of Dunhuang's Mogao Grottoes.

The book explores the evolving strategic partnership between Russia and China, highlighting the significance of cultural ties alongside political and economic factors. It emphasizes that the strengthening of trust through cultural connections has been pivotal in enhancing bilateral relations and suggests that these cultural developments will continue to underpin the partnership in the future.

Focusing on the administration of community sentences and early release options in China, this study offers empirical insights into the country's penal system. Chen examines how criminal courts navigate the choice between imprisonment and community sentences, supported by interviews with various supervisors. The book discusses the enforcement of community sanctions and critiques the limitations of China's disciplinary governance model, advocating for the rule of law and a more active judiciary to enhance legitimacy and social stability. It appeals to scholars in criminology, law, and penology.

In this thesis I show that midpoint subdivision of any degree = 2 generates subdivision surfaces which are C1-continuous at their extraordinary points. This extends the result by Zorin and Schröder for midpoint subdivision of degree up to 9 [ZS01]. To the best of my knowledge this is the first analysis for an entire class of (infinitely many) subdivision algorithms. Moreover, in this thesis I extend the result to an even wider class of subdivision algorithms that can be factored into midpoint operators and simplest subdivision [PR97].

Die kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Russland und China spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in der strategischen Partnerschaft beider Länder. Während Politik und Wirtschaft oft im Vordergrund stehen, zeigt sich, dass die Förderung vertrauensvoller kultureller Verbindungen ein wesentliches Fundament für die bilaterale Zusammenarbeit bildet. Diese Entwicklung wird auch in Zukunft eine zentrale Bedeutung für die Stabilität und Intensität der Partnerschaft haben.

Die vorliegende Arbeit versteht sich als Versuch in der kontrastiven Textsortenanalyse linguistischen Fragestellungen in Anlehnung an sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien, Konzepte und Ansätze nachzugehen. Im Rahmen des kommunikativen Gattungskonzepts und der sozialen Systemtheorie betrachtet Chen die Todesanzeige als Spiegel der Todes-, Erinnerungs- und Ritualkultur und als strukturelle Kopplung zwischen sozialen Systemen. Aufgrund einer empirischen Untersuchung werden Kulturalität, Sozialität, Interaktivität und Funktionalität der deutschen und chinesischen Todesanzeigen diskutiert. Neben der Ermittlung der kulturspezifischen Vertextungsmuster auf der Wort-, Satz und Textebene untersucht der Autor die sozialen Funktionen der Todesanzeige in Deutschland und China und geht auf deren kulturellen Hintergrund ein. Die erarbeiteten Erkenntnisse bieten nicht nur neuartige Einblicke in die soziokulturellen Besonderheiten der beiden Länder, sie erweitern mit ihrer sozialwissenschaftlichen Annährung auch den Blickwinkel der kontrastiven Textsortenforschung.
