The catalogue presents some of David Chipperfield Architect's current work, that is either recently completed, or in progress. We hope to expose in a more open manner, not a glossy presentation of an overview of our work, but a more open explanation of the work of the architect. This does not mean that the aesthetics of presentation are avoided, rather they are balanced by an attempt to communicate thoughts and concerns that are still in our minds and are part of our process. In order to emphasise this, each project team has been responsible for developing their own installation. We also want to avoid the idea that this process is anything but messy. The development of ideas is not consistent from project to project. Every process is subject to different possibilities and limits. Some projects develop intensely through a concentrated process of competition while others evolve through changes in circumstances and demands. Some are elaborated through sketches and modifications and some evolve through a more mechanical process of revision and the examination of alternatives. (David Chipperfield) Including the projects: Cavea Arcari, Zovencedo, Italy; Inagawa Cemetery chapel and visitor centre, Hyogo, Japan; Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland; Hoxton Press, London, UK; Procuratie Vecchie, Venice, Italy; Edinburgh music venue, Edinburgh, UK; Zhejiang Natural History Museum, China; Amorepacific headquarters, Seoul, South Korea; Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK; Valentino store concepts; James Simon Galerie, Berlin, Germany; Lah Contemporary, Bled, Slovenia; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany; Brioni store concepts; Private house Zurich, Switzerland; West Bund Art Museum, Shanghai, China; Fundación RIA, Galicia, Spain

    • This publication was initiated by David Chipperfield who also is responsible for concept and design. In four chapters he refers to topics he also writes on: “On Form”, “Language”, “Composition”, and “Materiality”. He did also choose for the images and architectural sketches and drawings. Ω “As architects we must both be part of and stand apart from the culture within which we operate. To be effective we must embrace power but also distance ourselves, we must engage in dialogue and we must refuse to listen, we must explore the familiar and the unfamiliar, we must embrace history and reject it. Finally we must resolve our ideas in matter and form”. (David Chipperfield) David Chipperfield presents a very personal ‘notebook’ that follows no fixed system, but rather documents the realisation of formal ideas from his own viewpoint, using sketches, plans and illustrations of built and unbuilt projects—a personal statement on his work to date. He explores the relationship between form and matter, both conceptually and in its concrete realisation in architecture.
