David Brenner untersucht den Wandel der deutschen Fanszene sowohl in seinem historischen Verlauf als auch in seiner soziologischen Dimension. Insbesondere thematisiert er die Kommerzialisierung des professionellen Fußballsports und die seit den 1980er Jahren zunehmenden und verfeinerten Ordnungsmaßnahmen im Umfeld von Fußballspielen als maßgebliche Faktoren für die Veränderungen der Fanszene. Die Fangemeinde von Eintracht Frankfurt gilt seit langem als Vorreiter neuer Entwicklungen und wird deshalb exemplarisch besonders hervorgehoben.
