Le Corbusiers Masterplan und seine Gebäude für Chandigarh gehören zu den wegweisenden städtebaulichen Projekten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Schweizer Fotograf Ernst Scheidegger reiste in den 1950er-Jahren dreimal während der Bauzeit in die Hauptstadt des indischen Bundesstaats Punjab. Mit einer Auswahl seiner Aufnahmen entwarf er eine Buchmaquette, in die auch einige Skizzen und Zeichnungen Le Corbusiers Einlass fanden. Chandigarh 1956 sollte den Auftakt einer Reihe von Büchern bilden, die das Ziel verfolgten, die Ideen der architektonischen Moderne und deren gesellschaftliche Anliegen breiter bekannt zu machen. Die Reihe wurde nie publiziert, doch das Buchprojekt zeugt von der visionären Idee, Architektur und Städtebau durch Fotobücher und andere Medien zu popularisieren. Dieses Buch präsentiert nun erstmals die Farb- und Schwarzweissfotografien, die Ernst Scheidegger damals in Chandigarh aufnahm. Zudem wird das Faksimile der Originalmaquette von 1956 reproduziert. Die Essays skizzieren Geschichte und Bedeutung von Chandigarh, insbesondere wird die Rolle von Le Corbusiers Mitstreitern Pierre Jeanneret, Jane B. Drew und E. Maxwell Fry breit untersucht. Ein weiterer Beitrag analysiert Scheideggers Bilder im Kontext ihrer Entstehungszeit und die fotografische Repräsentation von Chandigarh im Allgemeinen.

Sketches and notes for Chandigarh from Le Corbusier's first reconnaissance trip to India This facsimile edition of the notebook kept by Le Corbusier (1887-1965) from his two-week stay in the area that would become Chandigarh, the new capital city of the Indian state of Punjab, presents his written or sketched memos and personal reflections as well as notes and schematic solutions elaborated during meetings. Album Punjabconstitutes a primary source for reconstructing the topics addressed by the small group of planners and governmental officials who in only a few days developed the outlines of the Chandigarh plan. The spiralbound notebook facsimile is accompanied by a paperback volume featuring previously unpublished photographs taken by Le Corbusier's cousin Pierre Jeanneret during the journey. He documented the landscape and people that the architects encountered upon their arrival--a scenario destined to totally change with the birth of the great city. A detailed commentary by architectural historian Maristella Casciato is also included. The two volumes are housed in a slipcase.
