Die Idee zur Schildkröten-Bibliothek resultierte aus der großen Nachfrage zum Schildkröten-Lexikon von Holger Vetter. Die Resonanz auf das Lexikon war überaus positiv und das Erstaunen groß, welche Fülle von Information in den einzelnen Heften zu finden ist. Allerdings folgte dann immer wieder die Frage nach Bildern und nach noch mehr Details zur Haltung. Verlag und Autor kamen zu dem Entschluss, auf diese Nachfrage hin eine neue Buchreihe zu konzipieren. Grundlage der Bände sind die Texte des Lexikons, die allerdings um Informationen zur Haltung und um viele Fotos ergänzt und auch insgesamt aktualisiert werden. Alle Bände werden in Deutschland gedruckt und von der Verlagsbuchbinderei Freitag in Kassel in traditioneller Fadenheftung mit einem festen Einband gebunden. Die Verwendung einer speziell für den Lexikon-Bereich entwickelten Schrift erleichtert die Lesbarkeit.
