This book examines the influence of the EU on party politics in the ten 'new' EU countries from a variety of perspectives and using a range of empirical sources. The book thus makes an original and distinctive contribution both to contemporary EU studies and to the literature on CE party systems and party development.
Vor dem Hintergrund der tschechischen Parlamentswahlen der Jahre 1992 und 1996 und im größeren Rahmen der legislativen Veränderungen sowie der Zukunft der Demokratie in der Tschechischen Republik befassen sich die Beträge dieses Bandes vor allem mit dem gegenwärtigen Kristallisationsprozeß des Parteiensystems: Welche Verknüpfungen und Gegensätze liegen der Kristallisation zugrunde? Welcher Art waren diese Gegensätze in den ersten Jahren der Transformation? Durch wen wurden sie repräsentiert, und was bildet die Basis eines stabilen Parteiensystems? Das Buch untersucht auch die Bedeutung der Wahlergebnisse für die Kabinettsbildung, denn angesichts der aktuellen Wahlbedingungen für das Unterhaus des tschechischen Parlaments besteht die Gefahr einer instabilen Regierung. Darüber hinaus werden unerwartete Konsequenzen der Wahlergebnisse analysiert, etwa der Zusammenbruch der tschechoslowakischen Föderation nach der Wahl von 1992 und die Errichtung einer unabhängigen tschechischen Republik. Der Band gibt damit einen tiefen Einblick in die langwierigen und widersprüchlichen Diskussionen über die ersten Parlaments- und Senatswahlen.
Informal relations have been one of the major research topics of the social sciences since the 1990s. In order to allow for meaningful comparisons between different combinations of the positive and negative effects of informal relations on democratic representation, all the articles in this book focus on post-socialist Central and Eastern Europe as a particular region where formal democratic rules have been established but competing informal rules are still strong. The first section discusses a broad spectrum of related analytical concepts from different perspectives and from different academic disciplines. The second part then goes on to analyse empirical cases of the relationship between informal relations and democratic representation. The contributions span the whole continuum, as we perceive it, from civil society networks seen as supporting democratic representation to the perversion of democratic representation through political corruption. The final part of the book then takes a closer look at corruption through four case studies from Russia. This book presents a selection of the papers discussed at the Changing Europe Summer School on ‘Informal Networks, Clientelism and Corruption. Case Studies from Central and Eastern Europe’ held in Prague at the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in August 2010.
The volume presents a collection of articles and analyses exploring various paths of Europeanisation process in Eastern Europe. The articles provide an interdisciplinary reflection on the Eastern enlargement as well as on recent situation in new member states. The contributions of recognised social scientists from both Eastern and Western Europe cover a broad range of aspects of the Europeanisation process ranging from the relationship between societal integration and European polity building to the questions of property rights or knowledge capacity in new member states. The volume is divided into three sections, dealing with general social science perspective on the EU enlargement, with challenges of Europeanisation and finally focusing on detailed aspects of the integration pro- cesses in country studies (covering Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania). This book is intended for scholars, students, policy makers and general readers interested in the new developments in the Eastern part of integrating Europe.
