En savoir plus sur le livre

In this book Alfred Birney discusses the literature from the Dutch Indies from a new perspective. He first identifies the difference between the Indo and the Indo-European culture. From this distinction he starts to zoom in to Indo writers who have been largely forgotten by the history and literary canon. Paying attention to Indo writers and their literature, like the writer De-lilah, he comes to a much more diverse and realistic image of the colonial society of the Dutch Indies. Birney sees parallels between this colonial society in the Dutch Indies and the problems in present Dutch society, such as racism and xenophobia.
