En savoir plus sur le livre

Intended for both the general reader and those familiar with Fr. Sergius Bulgakov's life and work, this text introduces the "layers" of his multi-dimensional sophiology. It presents this sophiology as a valuable interpretive lens for addressing contemporary concerns, both local and global, in a trans-disciplinary manner, referencing recent English-language scholarship up to the early twenty-first century. The late Orthodox writer Philip Sherrard spoke of "a single unified science," which can only exist when rooted in the wisdom and glory of God. This study situates Bulgakovian sophiology within a broader context, including the Great Tradition or perennial wisdom. Bulgakov is portrayed as a visionary Christian writer and humanist, with his sophiology remaining relevant for the future as it embodies a Christian expression of the unitive vision that acknowledges and transcends modern and postmodern notions of "difference." Within Christian Orthodoxy, his sophiology connects with the quest for a more open and progressive Orthodoxy grounded in liturgical practice and patristic spirituality. It is proposed that sophiology is best seen as an approach to understanding and addressing inner resistances to the reign of heaven in today's world. A companion volume, published in September 2017, focuses on humanity's possible futures in light of Holy Wisdom. This work is part of the Perennials Study Group publication series.
