This compelling group of essays on the new kind of poverty in post-communist Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Slovakia is based on the findings of surveys conducted in those countries in 1999- 2000 by SzelTnyi (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.), his graduate students, and colleagues.
