Peter Paul Rubens

La sensualité de la vie

En savoir plus sur le livre

A simple mission lies at the heart of this publication: to provide a comprehensive view of the great Flemish master. Featuring 163 paintings, sketches, and drawings, along with nine tapestries, it aims for a faithful understanding of the artist's evolution, from his early influences under Otto Venius and Italian art to his later achievements, including significant Spanish commissions. The work encompasses all genres, showcasing landscapes, portraits, altarpieces, genre scenes, and historical paintings, as well as Rubens' skills as a decorator through his painted sketches and tapestries. The master's oeuvre is organized into five categories: Beginnings, Influence of Italy, Middle-Class Patronage, Official Commissions, and Secular Themes. Special attention is given to the genesis of his art through the inclusion of tapestries. Notable works such as *Descent from the Cross*, *Laying in the Sepulchre*, and *The Stoning of Saint Stephen*, along with altarpieces for Lille's churches, are highlighted. This homage aims to deepen the understanding of Rubens for general readers, connoisseurs, and historians alike, offering a fresh perspective through the juxtaposition of works not previously presented together. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Lille, France.
