As the global energy system undergoes unprecedented changes, a struggle for control over this sector intensifies, raising the crucial issue of "green capitalism." Both capitalist planners and anti-capitalist movements are confronting the urgent need to save the planet alongside the economy. This situation marks the next phase of global class struggle, with energy as a central means of production and subsistence. The quest for control over the energy system presents no simple solutions. This work delves into the terms "energy sector" and "energy system," placing the current energy crisis, peak oil, and the transition to a post-petrol future within a historical context that encompasses social, economic, political, financial, military, and ecological relations. The authors examine the systemic ties between energy production and consumption and the global division of labor that underpins capitalism, highlighting its conflicts, hierarchies, crises, and class struggles. With contributions from around twenty countries, this collective effort offers a comprehensive overview of the dynamic struggles within the energy sector. Kolya Abramsky, a former visiting fellow and award recipient in energy research, is pursuing a PhD in sociology at the State University of New York, Binghamton.
