En savoir plus sur le livre
Created in 1911, Henri Matisse's The Red Studio is a pivotal work in modern art, displayed at MoMA since 1949. The painting portrays the artist's studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux, filled with his artworks, furniture, and decorative items. Matisse's bold choice to cover most of the canvas in red has intrigued scholars and artists alike, yet much about the painting's origins and history remains to be explored. This illustrated volume accompanies an exhibition that reunites the artworks featured in The Red Studio for the first time since they left Matisse's workspace. It examines both well-known pieces, like Le Luxe (II) (1907-08), now at SMK—National Gallery of Denmark, and lesser-known works recently rediscovered. A narrative essay by Ann Temkin, Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, and Dorthe Aagesen, Chief Curator at SMK, chronicles the painting's journey from its commissioning to its exhibition history and eventual placement at MoMA. Through groundbreaking research and detailed analysis, this book enriches our understanding of this landmark piece of twentieth-century art.
