Colonization significantly affects identity across generations, particularly regarding historical trauma and education. This book presents a collection of personal accounts, interviews, and biographical research from native New Mexicans, illustrating the lasting impact of colonization from the late 1800s to today. The findings emphasize the necessity of decolonizing educational environments and advocate for examining these spaces through a Tribal Critical Race Theory (TribalCrit) and Indigenous storywork lens. This perspective aids Indigenous students in discovering their identity (finding face), realizing their potential (finding foundation), and connecting with their spirituality (finding heart). By employing TribalCrit, educational institutions can empower Indigenous students to explore their cultural and academic identities. The study also emphasizes the need for a decolonizing approach, integrating Indigenous and Western academic knowledge through various methods: Indigenous storywork protocol, conversational data collection, boxed writing for analysis, and arts-based research for presentation. While the research acknowledges that complete decolonization is unattainable, it underscores the importance of striving for a more inclusive and culturally responsive educational framework.
