In recent years, the history of universities, particularly the history of individual subjects, has gained significant attention in the German-speaking world. While other Austrian universities have published monographs on the history of the subject of history, the University of Vienna, often referred to as the "Capitals of Europe University," has not. This volume focuses on the gradual proliferation and specialization of historical chairs, seminars, and institutes since the late 18th century, with particular emphasis on developments from the mid-19th century onward, alongside the lives, works, and impacts of their professors. Additionally, it includes dedicated sections on the early days of women's studies, the Academic Association of German Historians in Vienna, the experiences of Viennese historians during the National Socialist period, and the processes of denazification and restoration that followed in 1945.
