In light of today's growing economic and ecological challenges, wood is increasingly recognized as a vital renewable resource for energy and industrial products. Its unique chemical and anatomical structure enables a wide range of applications, from logs to furniture and paper. This book reviews recent advancements in understanding the cellular aspects of cambial growth and wood formation in trees. It is organized into two main sections. The first part outlines the fundamental process of wood biosynthesis, detailing five key steps: cell division, cell expansion, secondary cell wall formation, programmed cell death, and heartwood formation. The second part explores the regulation of wood formation through both endogenous and exogenous factors. On the endogenous side, it highlights the roles of phytohormones and molecular mechanisms. Exogenous influences, such as climate factors, are also considered. Recent advancements in microscopic and molecular techniques have significantly enhanced our understanding of wood formation. By emphasizing cellular aspects, the book provides a comprehensive overview of wood formation processes and the regulatory factors that influence them.
